3 Delectable Recipes to Warm Up Your Winter!

Winter is almost here, and it’s time to prepare all the recipes to keep ourselves warm and cosy during the cold months. We’ve featured casseroles in the past, but here are three other ways to enjoy the tastiest treats while still keeping warm. For the few of us who are morning persons, or at least have to get up early for work or school, the importance of having a hearty and delicious breakfast cannot be underrated. And of course, a go-to cup of hot chocolate – as well as a yummy dessert for later – cannot be missed! With this in mind, here are 3 winter recipes to help you kick off your day with some yummy dishes right off the bat!

Baked Fruits and Oatmeal

PREP TIME: 15 minutes
COOK TIME: 35 minutes
SERVINGS: 8-10

Ingredients

  • 300 g rolled oats
  • 90 g apples, peeled and chopped
  • 75 g peaches, chopped
  • 35 g blueberries
  • 200 g brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 250 ml fat-free milk
  • 100 g melted butter
  • 2 tsps baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix oats, sugar, salt, baking powder, and cinnamon in a bowl.
  2. In another bowl, mix eggs with milk and butter, then add to the dry ingredients.
  3. Gradually stir in peaches, apples and blueberries.
  4. Grease a baking dish with cooking spray.
  5. Pour the mixture into a baking dish.
  6. Bake uncovered for 35 minutes at 175C.
  7. Cut into squares and serve!

Doughnuts with Berry Filling

COOK TIME: 15 minutes
SERVINGS: 8-10

Ingredients

  • 200 g buttermilk biscuits* (separate into 10 pieces)
  • 250 g strawberry jam
  • 500 g icing sugar
  • 1 L canola oil (for deep frying)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil to 190C in a large skillet or a deep-fryer.
  2. Fry your biscuits, making sure they are never overcrowded in the pan or fryer.
  3. Cook for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
  4. Drain biscuits on paper towels after frying to remove excess oils.
  5. Take a pastry bag and use your smallest tip. Fill bag with jam.
  6. Push the pastry bag tip through the side of each doughnut and fill with jam.
  7. Dust icing sugar on the doughnuts while warm.
  8. Serve while hot!

*Buttermilk biscuits are readily available in most stores and comes in cans, to be stored in the fridge

Delicious Hot Chocolate

PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME: 5 minutes
SERVINGS: 4-6

Ingredients

  • 60 g cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • 230 g whipping cream
  • 130 g sugar
  • 750 ml whole milk
  • 187.5 ml heavy cream
  • 187.5 ml light cream
  • 125 ml water
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • salt

Instructions

  1. Scrape the seeds of the vanilla bean and place into the food processor. Do not throw away bean.
  2. Add sugar to the processor and blend for 10 seconds.
  3. Take 3 tbsps of the mixture and set aside in a bowl.
  4. Take the rest of the mixture and pour into a saucepan.
  5. Add cocoa powder, water, and salt into the saucepan. Whisk over medium heat until smooth.
  6. Once starting to bubble, add whole milk and the half and half.
  7. Add the bean from earlier.
  8. Let the mixture simmer.
  9. Remove from heat. Add vanilla extract. Remove bean.
  10. Beat the reserved 3 tbsps of vanilla sugar mixture from earlier with whipping cream in a bowl.
  11. Whip until medium-firm peaks form.
  12. Serve hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream.
