World Vegan Month 20122012 Nov 01 | Written by: Zye Angiwan | Tags: Vegan Food
Vegans all over the world have good reason to welcome November with open arms – it’s World Vegan Month! An annual celebration, World Vegan Month kicks off with World Vegan Day on November 1 and continues throughout the month with various World Vegan Month events in cities all over the planet.
First proposed and organised by Louise Wallis, the former President and Chair of The Vegan Society UK back in 1994, World Vegan Month was born both as a commemoration of the term “vegan” and to mark the anniversary of The Vegan Society. The term “vegan” was coined in 1944 by Donald Watson, co-founder of The Vegan Society, to mean “non-dairy vegetarian”. “Vegan” has since come to encompass a wider range of ideals and meanings, not just in dietary habits but extending to a kind of lifestyle and philosophy. Veganism promotes the basic thought that humans should live without treating animals as commodities.
2012 marks the 68th anniversary of the term “vegan” and The Vegan Society, and is the 18th World Vegan Month. Australia has seen active participation in World Vegan Month in the past years, with yearly festivals happening in the country’s key cities.
World Vegan Day Melbourne
First celebrated in 2003 through a picnic beside Albert Park Lake, World Vegan Day in Melbourne is now on its 9th year. Headed by a committee affiliated with the Vegetarian Network Victoria, this year’s event will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Princes Park, Carlton. Participants and visitors can look forward to educational talks, good music and entertainment, cooking demos, kids’ activities, speed dating, food stalls, art spaces and exhibitions, overall fun and festivities.
Vegan Festival Adelaide
Established by Kas Ward in 2007, Adelaide hosts the Vegan Festival this year on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Victoria Square/Tarndanyangga. The festival features live band performances, movies, talks and workshops, cooking demos and exhibitions. Opportunities to volunteer and help out during the Vegan Festival itself are now open.
